An ancient practice, applied with modern technique, with a real role in a treatment plan.
Gua sha is an ancient Chinese practice that has had a recent resurgence in skincare and wellness circles. At Ivory, we use a modernised version as part of certain facial protocols, with realistic claims about what it does and does not do.
What it is. Gua sha uses a smooth-edged tool, often jade or quartz, drawn across the skin in specific patterns and directions. The pressure is firm but not painful. The technique stimulates microcirculation, supports lymphatic drainage, and produces a temporary firming and contouring effect.
What it can do. Immediate softening of facial puffiness, particularly around the eyes and jawline, by supporting lymphatic clearance. Mild jaw and forehead tension relief through fascial release. A temporary contour and definition effect that holds for several hours, useful before events. Improved absorption of subsequently applied serums and creams.
What it does not do. Permanently change facial structure. Lift the face in a way comparable to surgery, threads, or even non-surgical lifting platforms. Replace any of the treatments we run for skin quality, texture, or laxity.
Where we use it. As part of the closing protocol of certain facials, particularly for clients with persistent fluid retention or puffiness. As a standalone short session before events when a quick, subtle improvement is wanted. As a teaching session where we show the client how to do a basic version at home.
Home practice. A simple daily gua sha routine, three to five minutes, supports the in-clinic work between sessions. We teach the basic technique during the session and recommend a tool to use. The home version is gentler than the in-clinic version.
Who should be careful. Clients with very thin skin or rosacea, where the friction can trigger flushing. Anyone with recent injectables in the treatment area, wait at least two weeks before any massage-based work. Clients with skin conditions that contraindicate friction.
It is not a standalone aesthetic solution. It is a complementary practice that pairs well with the rest of a programme.
