How the same laser technology serves two different uses, and the careful protocols each needs.
The Q-switched laser is one of the most versatile platforms in our arsenal. The same wavelengths, delivered with slightly different settings, address pigmentation concerns and tattoo removal. The protocols are different and the outcomes need different framing.
For pigmentation. Q-switched laser at low energy is used to break down excess melanin in conditions like sun spots, lentigines, and certain types of melasma. The pulse is so short that the energy targets the pigment without significant heat damage to surrounding tissue. The fragmented pigment is then cleared by the body's lymphatic system over the following weeks.
What works well. Discrete sun spots and lentigines respond best, often with one to three sessions delivering meaningful clearance. Melasma is more complex and needs a careful programme, low-energy sessions paired with strict home care and sun avoidance. Ephelides (freckles) respond but tend to recur with sun exposure.
What does not work. Deep dermal pigmentation that has been present from childhood (some birthmarks). Pigmentation in actively inflamed skin, treating without addressing the underlying inflammation first risks rebound darkening. Skin types where the pigmentation is closely matched to the surrounding skin tone, the risk of hypopigmentation with treatment is higher.
For tattoo removal. The same Q-switched laser, but at higher energy and with wavelengths matched to the ink colour, is the established standard. Black ink responds best, followed by dark blue. Red and yellow are more difficult, white ink can sometimes darken with laser exposure (we test a small area first).
What to expect for tattoo removal. Multiple sessions, six to ten typically, eight weeks apart. The tattoo fades progressively across the course. Some tattoos clear fully, some leave a residual ghost. We never promise complete clearance, we map progress with photographs and adjust expectations as the course unfolds.
What clients should know. SPF 50+ on the treated area for two weeks before and after every session. Avoiding sun exposure to allow the body to clear fragmented pigment. Patience across the timeline, neither pigmentation nor tattoo removal is rapid.
A careful consultation includes test patches for clients with darker skin tones to confirm the response before committing to a full course.
